Q: With unique production skills, a completely original sound and a major album, Minimalized, due out on Rubik Records in mid-May, Tokyo based wunderkind Heavy1 has a big year ahead of him. We had a chance to chat with the up-and-coming producer on more about the album, future collaborations and what's up next for him. As a new face and name to the Kmag readers, please introduce yourself and tell us a bit more where you're from and how you got started in making music?

A:I'm Heavy1 and I'm a drum n' bass creator. As a DJ, my activity generally revolves around my own event "NEON" and well as at Makoto's "Human Elements" party. So far at my own event I've booked artists such as Icicle, Lenzman, and Spectrasoul since about 4 or 5 years ago when there was also a deep drum n' bass revival movement starting. That's how I first got to meet these artists. Recently I actually just finished up organizing Lenzman's Japan tour. When we consider the difficulties in terms of economics and sheer distance, there are quite a lot of demerits encountered when bringing artists from Europe and the UK over to Japan, but I want to keep exposing Japan's drum n' bass-heads to fresh sounds and new, upcoming producers, so I intend to keep working to bring over such artists. Changing the topic a bit, I have been deeply into drum n' bass since I was about 18 years old. And from around that time, I also began making tracks. I didn't even think that I wanted to DJ, but in order to understand what kind of music it is and what its structure and concepts consist of, I went on a record buying-spree. At that time, there were records such as releases from Chemical Records and Redeye that you couldn't buy in Japan, so I ordered them from the UK. As my record collection grew, so did my inspiration for my own tracks, and I naturally also began performing. My production skill got better with my determination to figure out how to make the exact sound that I wanted, and I played with creating synthesizer sounds and customizing software settings on my own. I really felt passionate about music and wanted to share this great drum n' bass music and also my own tracks with other people, so the next step was to start my own party in Tokyo, and from those early stages around 2006 I decided to book the artists whose sound I felt the most connection with. Even still nowadays, Icicle and Lenzman still give me advice on creating sounds and developing my career in music, and I really feel that they have such an influence on my musical sense.

Q:Coming out of Tokyo, this is a fairly unheard of city to produce a lot of drum & bass artists. How does living in Japan influence your music production and where do you see the future of Japan DnB going?

A:I agree with you. In reality, there are very few people in Japan who are producing drum n' bass. Japan's drum n' bass DJs give off the impression that they lack motivation or interest in making their own sounds. I think anyone who has been to Tokyo before will understand this, it's an extremely busy town. We're bombarded with an unbelievable amount of information, but Japanese people tend to just passively absorb the information that they encounter even though we're now in the era where we can go and search for what we want on our own. That's why when it comes to originality, people here are still quite passive in terms of seeking out something new. Even if there's something in particular they are drawn too, they tend to like to just go with the flow of what everyone says is good. The further development of Japan's drum n' bass scene will depend on whether or not more people will come to recognize this issue. But also over here, the line between hobbyists and professionals is often quite vague and the level of enthusiasm for something varies person to person, so I don't intend to try and force this view on anyone. Actually, the sounds in my music reflect the inhuman, robotic nature of Tokyo and some more brutal feelings as well, but actually this is just me spitting out ideas that stem from my own personal inner complexes. If I look at it from a different perspective, Tokyo is actually a place from which one can derive quite a lot of musical inspiration. Even when it comes to drum n' bass. Recently, even here in Japan, little by little I've seen an increase in the number of other DJs I know who have began create tracks and start up labels. Since quite long ago, Makoto took an overwhelming lead in Japan's drum n' bass scene, but aside from Makoto I also respect artists such as Ena, Velocity, Cardz MC, and Key MC, all of whom are providing a voice from Japan's drum n' bass scene to the world. If more artists like this start appearing, eventually I want to make a mix or do a DJ set consisting entirely of Japanese DJ's works.

Q:You had some strong influences and mentors like Icicle and Makoto as you learned your craft. Can you tell us a bit more about how you linked up with them and how that effected your music production?

A:From Icicle, I learned feeling and musicianship, and from Makoto I learned about attitude and approach towards music.

Q:You had your first major release on Rubik Records in 2010 w/ 'Living In The Dark' b/w 'Rains'. How do you feel your production has progressed since then and how did you initially link up with the guys from Rubik?

A:I heard that label owner Nik heard my track "Specium" which was signed to Vampire Records, and from there he contacted me. There was that time period when Nik became the owner and the new Rubik Records was born, and I'm really happy to have been a part of things at that time. As for how I made "Living in the Dark" b/w "Rains," the songs' image was taken seriously as if making a story. Also, I intentionally threw in some elements from techno and created some tricky beats to give the tracks a feeling of tension that keeps going from start to finish.

Living In The Dark' b/w 'Rains'.

Q:You had a big release last year, topping the charts with a tune called 'Xiphactinus' remixed by the mighty Lenzman. How do you connect with him and what was it like working with one of the top guys in DnB?

A:I credit this one to the efforts and ambitions of Deman Record's label owner Carlos. Actually for me personally, moreso than our connection as producers, Lenzman is a good friend who I want to spend some awesome, fun times with in Japan.

Q:Now just weeks away from releasing your first full length LP 'Minimalized' out on Rubik Records, how does it feel to have a featured album project so close to release?

A:Rubik Records tells me they want to release my album in April. But actually, discussion regarding me releasing an album first started when they contacted me about it last July, and the idea was to compile the tracks that I've already released through Rubik Records with some new, original tracks of mine. But, if I'm going through the effort to make a release in a proper album format, then I want to make something based on a consistent concept. That's why it's jam-packed with new tracks created specifically for the album. With the goal of making an album, every day I entered the studio was so much fun. I wanted to do all I could for this. And actually I was able to finish all the tracks by the end of last August! Production took essentially just over a month.

Q:The 'Minimalized' LP covers a wide range of sounds and tempos, everything from drum & bass to dubstep and even some 125 BPM bass music for good measure. Can you give us a description of what we can expect from the LP and when it will be available? A:As part of the album concept, I really wanted to put in some sounds that are like the sounds you get from old hardware. And also, no matter what genre we're talking about, if we're talking about going back-to-basics, last year's 80's revival trend summed it up pretty well. What I had strongly envisioned was taking these sounds, and then putting in my own drum n' bass interpretation and ideally keeping things around 130 BPM. Apart from this concept, there's a track on the album called "Pulse" which I made with Key MC. I wanted to make a really intense track, and before I made it I already had the idea that the kind of sound I wanted to make couldn't be properly expressed with the drum n' bass sound that I had already made, so I got into the idea of making it at 140BPM. So the way I made the track is entirely the same way I make drum n' bass.

Q:Already circulating and due to be released on 13th of Feb. you're putting out a 12" vinyl sampler of the album featuring a tune you've done w/ June Miller called 'Judge' b/w 'Light Upon My Road'. Please tell us how you linked with the June Miller guys and anything else in the works for another collaboration?

A:I first connected with June Miller 3 years ago. A long time ago, I didn't like making collaboration tracks with other people, but I really respected their production and strongly felt that I wanted to make a track together with them. I then approached them about it, and this is how we first started working on a song together. Aside from the current release "Judge" there's also a track we made together in 2010 called "Electric," and at first I asked them if I could use that track on this album. They didn't really agree to that idea, and so we started making a new track together. I'm so grateful that despite their busy schedule, they were quite speedy in finishing up the track. Also just around the same time, on SoundCloud I got a message from Venezuelan female singer Iriann Joyce saying that she wanted to make a song together. With the idea for the track "Light Upon My Road" based around her image and voice, I ended up unexpectedly producing this mellow kind of sound which I had never made before. Also, I get so much wonderful inspiration when I make tracks with Key MC, who I work alongside here in Japan. I think sometimes tracks turn out in a good way because of collaborations like these.

Q:With a bright future and career ahead of you, the only question left to ask is what's next for Heavy1?

A:Well, it's not just because I'm releasing an album, but this year I want to go to the UK and some other countries in Europe and gain all kinds of experience related to music. Also, in order to make even better tracks, I want to interact with various artists and enter the studio together.

Jaybee & Sinistarr - Should I VIP Remix.
